My mother has always been a fan of leather items. Leather bound diaries, leather bracelets that has an embossed animal of the year each of us was born. For my thirteenth birthday, I received a leather bracelet with a dragon embossed and my birth date. Since I was born on nineteen seventy six, a dragon represents my Chinese year.

For my brothers, they got leather wristbands, so they won’t appear too feminine. On the inside of the wristbands was their birth date and my mother’s special name for each of them.

We all thought that it was cute in a funny way, until she passed away two years ago. We lost her to cancer, and fortunately, it was a quick death. She didn’t suffer too long, and the pain did not eat at her too much.

We are planning on getting together, on her birthday, a few weeks from now, and we wanted to give out leather bracelets to all family members, to honour our mother’s memory.

Not only are we remembering her in the leather bracelets we will be giving away, but each of us will have these to wear for a long time to come. These aren’t just ‘in memory of’ bracelets, but quality accessories as well. We made sure that they don’t look tacky, or make it appear too ‘mournful’ in appearance. Since it is leather, the animal that represents her birth year is embossed on the top, and the person’s name right beside it.
